Privacy Policy
Privacy is a product feature, not a footnote.
Rome is designed so people can reconnect after real-world proximity without exposing live location, historical routes, or a public map of nearby users.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information: When you sign up via Apple Sign In or Google Sign-In, we receive the account information needed to provide the service, such as your name and email address. We also collect profile information you choose to provide, such as photos, prompts, and preferences.
Proximity Data: We use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to detect nearby Rome users. This involves exchanging anonymous, rotating identifiers. We do not collect GPS or precise location data.
Foreground Activity: When an eligible authenticated user brings the app to the foreground, Rome records the date and time, platform, app version, and a coarse country code inferred by the network edge provider. This is not a statement of nationality or residence. For this feature, we do not store raw IP addresses, GPS, city, or precise location.
2. How We Use Data
We use your data solely to provide the Rome service, including matching you with people you've encountered, facilitating messaging between matches, and improving app performance. Foreground activity helps us understand aggregate product usage and daily active users, improve reliability, troubleshoot rollouts and app-version issues, and improve the service. We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
3. Data Retention
Bluetooth interaction logs (the "sightings" of other anonymous devices) are anonymous and randomly generated and can only be used by the server to resolve a match.
Per-user daily foreground activity rows are retained while your account is active and are deleted when you delete your account. Non-identifying aggregate statistics may remain.
4. Your Control and Deletion Rights
You can edit your profile at any time. You can delete your account directly within the app settings. Deletion removes or anonymizes personal account details, including Apple sign-in metadata and profile information. Some match, message, report, block, security, or service integrity records may be retained in anonymized or limited form where needed for safety, legal, anti-abuse, debugging, or operational purposes. Once deleted, your account cannot be recovered.
5. Safety and Moderation
Rome has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. To keep Rome safe, users can report and block others. Reports may be reviewed by our team to investigate safety issues and enforce our terms. Blocking helps prevent blocked pairs from seeing or messaging each other through matching surfaces.
